Surveys Abbreviated NEWS (ANEWS) Following analysis of the NQLS and PLACE data we have shortened the original NEWS survey.
The selection of items to be included in the abbreviated NEWS (ANEWS) was based on the following criteria and information obtained from data collected in the NQLS and PLACE studies: Criterion 1: Identification of redundant items (overlapping in content) Criterion 2: Magnitude and direction of associations between ratings on a specific item and reported weekly minutes of walking for transport and walking for recreation at the individual level (i.e., within neighbourhoods) and the neighbourhood level (i.e., between neighbourhoods) Criterion 3: Contribution of a specific item to the predictive validity of its factor in relation to walking for transport and walking for recreation Criterion 4: Loading of a specific item on its corresponding underlying dimension (factor) Criterion 5: Item test-retest reliability Criterion 6: Magnitude of intraclass correlation (i.e., how much of the total item variance is due to differences between neighbourhoods?)
